HANO’s largest future development project is the transformation of Iberville, with plans to provide one-for-one replacement of the existing 821 units in a mixed-income environment. In 2011, HANO and the City of New Orleans were granted $30.5 million as part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhoods Initiative. The grant award includes plans to revitalize the Iberville-Tremé neighborhood, improving its sustainability and increasing access to high quality services.

HANO’s future development activities at Iberville will focus on integrating the existing site physically and socially with the surrounding Treme neighborhood to create a diverse, mixed-income and sustainable community. HANO will also emphasize good design, including Energy Star appliances, modern amenities and improved public recreation and gathering spaces.

Iberville Artspace on the rocks; charter school wants building

This week's decision to assign a new school to the John McDonogh High campus in New Orleans might jeopardize affordable artists' housing that has long been in the works at the vacant Andrew Bell Junior High. KIPP New Orleans wanted to move its Believe elementary school from Carrollton to the John Mac campus in Esplanade Ridge, but the Louisiana Recovery School District chose a different applicant Wednesday (April 22).

New Orleans has never been a city of high-rises but of unique, colorful single-family homes. Yet nearly ten years into our recovery from Hurricane Katrina, the predominant redevelopment strategies are to build large apartment complexes and to rehabilitate schools and office buildings into multiplexes. The Iberville Offsites, 46 historic homes scattered throughout the city’s Tremé and 7th Ward neighborhoods, prove that it is possible to sensitively rehabilitate large numbers of single-family homes and provide affordable housing in the process.

Bell Junior High building in Treme to be converted into affordable artist housing

The board of the Housing Authority of New Orleans voted Tuesday to allow the agency to purchase the former Andrew J. Bell Junior High School from the Orleans Parish School Board and immediately transfer the property to a private developer who will turn the Treme campus into a place for artists and others to live and work.

The offices of the Tulane School of Social Work, several buildings on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard and the New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy in Algiers were among the 18 winners of this year's Louisiana Landmarks Society Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation. The awards honor renovation, restoration and new construction projects completed last year in neighborhoods throughout New Orleans, except the French Quarter.

HRI Closes on Financing, Third Iberville Rebuild Phase Begins

It's been over a year since we checked in on the demolition of the Iberville projects and their subsequent reconstruction as a mix of public, workforce and market rate housing, but the $600M project has soldiered on and the third and final phase is set to begin just as phases one and two are ending thanks to $22.8M that HRI Properties just closed with U.S. Bank. All told, 880 units will be available, with 227 of those units move-in ready by March.

Construction is set to begin on the third phase of the sprawling redevelopment of the former Iberville public housing complex for the Housing Authority of New Orleans. HRI Properties, part of the development team managing the $600 million Iberville rebuild, recently closed on financing with U.S. Bank for the $22.8 million third phase. Building permits were issued this past week.

When she came to New Orleans from Oregon in 2009, Jacqueline Hughes Mooney settled into a rental property in eastern New Orleans. When the possibility of living downtown became a reality, she jumped at the chance. Senior Apartments Open at Iberville

Officials are gathering at the old Texaco building on Canal Street Thursday morning to mark its transformation from corporate to residential use. The 17-story tower is now a home for seniors on a low fixed incomes. The building is now called Marais Apartments. It overlooks renovations and construction at the former Iberville public housing development at Canal and Marais streets. The $35 million project created 112 one-bedroom apartments set aside for people 62 years old or more, and it’s just about filled.

OSHA finds improper handling of lead and asbestos at Iberville construction site

Federal safety inspectors have found more than a dozen serious safety violations related to the handling of hazardous materials at the Housing Authority of New Orleans' Iberville construction site. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited four companies, including general contractor Durr Heavy Construction, for violations including failure to provide proper decontamination facilities and proper safety equipment required on job sites contaminated with lead and asbestos.
