Abundance

  Abundance Square

The, Abundance Square Community, (formerly known as the Desire Housing Development), is located in New Orleans' Upper Ninth Ward on 98 acres of land bounded by Piety Street on the west, Higgins Street on the north, Alvar Street on the east and Agriculture Street on the south. The development was built in 1957.

HANO was awarded a 1994 HOPE VI Revitalization Grant and a 1998 HOPE VI Demolition Grant for the total revitalization of the Desire Housing Development. These funds are being leveraged with local and private funding to create a multi-million dollar project budget.

The revitalization ncludes a new mix of housing types and the infusion of families with mixed incomes throughout the neighborhood.  The new Abundance Square Community will be comprised of both ACC units (283 units) and tax credit subsidized units (142 units) for a total of 425 multi-family rental units.  Of the 425 rental housing units, 65-percent are designated for families served by the public housing assistance program and 35-percent of the units are low-income housing tax credit eligible units.

Infrastructure activities completed include the installation of new streets and utilities to convert the super blocks to a typical street grid compatible with the surrounding neighborhood.  Streetscapes have been further enhanced by the installation of street lighting and careful planting of flowering and park-like trees in the neutral areas as well as along major thoroughfares.
