Fischer Homes
210-8824 - FAX: 210-8847 The W.J. Fischer Housing Development, LA-16, was built in 1965 and included 1,005 units of public housing. It is located on land in New Orleans’ West Bank neighborhood of Algiers, just across the Mississippi River from downtown New Orleans. Mardi Gras Avenue bounds it to the north and L.B. Landry (former Whitney Avenue) runs through its center. The Fischer development sits at the west end of the Mississippi River Bridge, effectively serving as a gateway to the community. The W. J. Fischer Development was demolished in phases beginning in 1996 and ending in 2008 with the intention of redeveloping the site into a mixed income community for affordable renters and home owners. Redevelopment efforts to date include the development of 123 mixed income rental units, 100 elderly designated public housing units, a management office and a community center for senior residents. These improvements were financed through the Capital Fund Financing Program, tax credits and Capital Funds. Fischer IV, the final phase of the Fischer Redevelopment, is currently underway. Fischer IV will encompass the construction of 124 single family dwelling structures of which 80 units will be affordable rental units including 10 public housing units and 44 units will affordable homeownership units. The first block of 16 units will be ready for occupancy in January 2010. The construction will be complete in the Spring of 2010. Driving directions found here.
